Clear Fire Retardant Paint

Fireproofing is a health and safety precaution that not many people take into consideration, although could prevent damage to properties and even harm to health. Clear fire-retardant paint is a cost effective and simple method of fireproofing your property and can be used on whatever material and structure that you require. There are many different types of clear fire-retardant paint for you to choose from.

Benefits of Clear Fireproofing Paint

When it comes to fireproofing your building, sometimes you don’t want to ruin the natural properties or texture of the material that you are painting and so it is beneficial having clear fire-retardant paint to maintain the original, raw texture and design, rather than painting over with colour. There are many other benefits to having fire retardant paint over structures and appliances within your property. Some of these include:

  • High Level Fire Protection – there are many different fire hazards in both your domestic, commercial and industrial properties and so it is a good idea to prepare for these events, should the worst situation come about.
  • Suitable on Many Surfaces – many fireproofing products are suitable for painting on different surfaces and so you can paint it onto anything where you feel would be beneficial and won’t have to purchase separate paint for the different material.
  • Easy Application – with easy application it means that it won’t be difficult for amateurs to apply the paint in their properties.

Fire retardants are used to control the outbreak of a fire and can be used on all kinds of surfaces. The main purpose is to delay or even prevent the spread of fire in your properties. There are many different types of fire retardant paint, with some having chemicals that emit gases that are designed to reduce the spread of flames. Others will form a protective char layer which will help protect the surface for a specific length of time. It is important to use these paints in an environment where there is a lot of fire exposure or high risk of the spread of fire with flammable products, as it will delay the spread of the fire and allow for more time to stop the fire from causing further damage.

Types of Clear Fire-Retardant Paint

There are two different types of fireproofing coatings which you can choose from; which are either intumescent paint or just the normal generic fire-proofing paint.

Intumescent means a coating or sealant which swells up when heated, protecting the material underneath or sealing a gap in the event of a fire. This works by a chemical reaction generated by heat. This form of coating is very cost-effective as well as an efficient and practical solution for fire protection and corrosion protection.

As well as preventing the spread of flames on more flammable items, it also helps to insulate steel surfaces from further thermal attack. In the case of fire, some coatings soften, react and decompose to form a carbon barrier. A foaming agent produces foam and a non-flammable gas and subsequently produces a protective layer which acts as a barrier.
